(Health-NewsWire.Net, May 25, 2015 ) Philadelphia, PA -- The Pennsylvania State Coroners Association most recently released a report revealing that over 2,000 people died in the year 2014 as a result of drug-related overdose deaths. The coroner's association concluded that with the initial data for 2015, that the numbers will continuously increase. The state coroners are among the first to alert the state of the growing prescription painkiller-heroin crisis.
Heroin and prescription pain medications have been attributed as the driving force for drug related overdose deaths. Heroin accounted for about 800 deaths, and heroin or a painkiller were present in about half of the overdose deaths, according to the Pennsylvania Coroner Association's report.
The report comes amid a continuously growing awareness of the addiction crisis involving prescription painkillers drugs and heroin. Authorities claim that a vast majority of people who find themselves addicted to heroin were initially addicted to prescription painkillers then switch to heroin because it's cheaper and easier to obtain.
The southeastern region of Pennsylvania, which includes Philadelphia, were 27.7 drug related overdose deaths per 100,000 people, causing this region to have the highest rate of drug related overdose deaths in the state.
The report also revealed that 83 percent of the overdose victims were caucasian, 12 percent African American, 4 percent Hispanic and 1 percent were of other races. Sixty five percent of these overdose death victims were men.
The report noted that drug overdose deaths Without more data concerning addiction and those who survive overdoses, the crisis will be dealt with "one grave at a time," the report concludes.
