Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer Controversy Discussed On ABC 33/40 In February, Dr. Blaudeau, who is both an attorney and practicing OB/GYN, discussed the controversy surrounding talcum powder and ovarian cancer with ABC 33/40, a Birmingham, Alabama TV station.

“A number of talcum powder ovarian cancer studies have shown that there is an increase risk and some type of relationship between the use of talc in a powder form and certain forms of ovarian cancer,” said Dr. François Blaudeau.
According to Dr. Blaudeau, women most at risk include those who have used talc-based powders as part of their regular feminine hygiene routine for 15 to 20 years.
“There is a possibility that these products may have increased your risk of developing ovarian cancer and you should go get screened,” he cautioned. Dr. Blaudeau did offer reassurance to parents who use talcum powder on infants, stating that he has not seen any evidence to suggest that this would pose an increased cancer risk. He also maintained that talc-containing cosmetics are safe, since they would not be applied to the genitals. However, Dr. Blaudeau did urge women to switch to cornstarch-based products if they use body powder for feminine hygiene.
Talcum Powder And Ovarian Cancer
talcum-powder-lawsuitTalcum Powder Ovarian Cancer Research tying the genital application of talc-based powders to ovarian cancer has been accumulating since the early 1970s, when scientists first found talc particles in ovarian and cervical tumors. Most recently, the journal Cancer Epidemiology reported that African-American women who regularly applied talc-based powders to their genitals were 40 percent more likely to develop ovarian cancer compared to their peers who did not. Regular talcum powder users who did not apply the products in their genital area had a 30 percent increased risk.

Court records indicate that Johnson & Johnson is facing more than 1,200 talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits involving its popular Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower products. In February, a jury in St. Louis, Missouri, ordered the company to pay $72 million to the family of an ovarian cancer victim who died after using the talc products as part of her daily feminine hygiene routine for more than three decades. In April, jurors hearing another Missouri case awarded $55 million to a South Dakota ovarian cancer survivor who had also applied Johnson & Johnson talcum powders to the genital region for decades.
